Etruscan Collection
Can a piece of jewelry tell a story spanning three thousand years of history? This incredible achievement is embodied in the new ETRUSCAN Collection created in the Florentine artisan workshop of Massai Orafi. Located in their historic headquarters near Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria, amidst ancient walls and traditional tools for working precious metals, they have brought to life an extraordinary collection of gold and precious stone jewelry with unique and original designs.
The excavation of funerary objects in Etruscan necropolises has unveiled a treasure trove of jewelry used for female adornment, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, tiaras, fibulae, and brooches, showcasing a level of opulence unprecedented in history.
These pieces not only reflected the social status of the women who wore them but also demonstrated the exceptional craftsmanship of Etruscan goldsmiths. Even today, experts in the field continue to study these artifacts to uncover their secrets, including the history of ancient artistic techniques.
The traditional goldworking technique known as Madrevitato, developed in ancient Etruria, has been preserved by Massai Orafi. This method allows them to craft intricate shapes like hearts, scrolls, and violin strings from thin gold sheets and small beads.
These elements are then assembled to create exclusive pieces of jewelry, such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. The process involves using special tweezers to twist thin gold threads into elaborate designs, which are further adorned with small gold
beads. Another ancient Etruscan technique known as granulation involves adding small gold spheres of varying sizes to the finished pieces. The fusion of these ancient techniques with contemporary artistry results in the creation of stunning and unique jewerly pieces by Massai Orafi.
Massai Orafi’s exquisite designs combine the traditional Madrevitato technique with exceptional craftsmanship, showcasing handcrafted pieces adorned with precious gems such as diamonds and colored stones that elevate the beauty and brilliance of the jewelry. These intricate and lightweight creations are not only comfortable to wear but also exude elegance, making a bold statement when worn.
Buried for centuries, the Etruscan civilization has resurfaced with its culture and works, including the art of goldsmithing. Velelia, Anthaia, and Thania are some of the names of Etruscan women who probably wore exquisite jewelry during their time, now recreated to make every woman feel special and precious.
